The Year Ahead - 18th April, 2009
Hello Everyone,
It has been a while since I have updated this site and my skills as a web developer are much better then they were just a year ago. I also have a lot more time then I used to and the need for a modern version of FreeRTE for modern web browsers is very apparent to me with the increased number of bugs being reported as each new web browser version is released and the complete lack of a *good* lightweight rich text editor that is suitable for high traffic sites where bandwidth matters.
So I have started working on a new version of Free Rich Text Editor. I have also taken full ownership of the
rtePad brand which means I now have full control of the direction and business operations of the rtePad project, which means a new unified approach between these 2 editors will be very much in mind from here on in.
Both of these rich text editors will be receiving "significant" upgrades to what you see today so for the next couple of months I will be busy getting all of this out the door to you guys, but rest assured, the Free Rich Text Editor project has been revived and the rtePad project has some BIG surprises in store that are sure to redefine what an online javascript rich text editor is capable of, so keep an eye on this site or the rtePad site for the latest news on these new versions (and new websites) or sign up to the new Free Rich Text Editor mailing list below.
In Essence both of these projects are being rebooted from scratch meaning that all existing code is being ditched in favor of new code and although these projects will share some code between each other, for the most part both of these editors will be COMPLETELY different to one another and taking different approaches. Since I am now the only developer of both of these projects, this will take some time to push both of these out the door, but I am hoping to have this done by June sometime (But don't take my word for it, as it is too early to tell for sure whether June is asking for too much or not)
That is all for now.
More Updates - 5th June, 2008
Hello, I have just upgraded the site and put it on a new server. The site should be much faster now. As a result of this mini-upgrade i have also updated the content on the website. Some further notes/updates below:
- FreeRTE has numerous issues in Internet Explorer, Apple Safari 3.0+ and Opera 9.5+
- A number of issues have arisen about the kind of characters used when using special characters. This is done by some 3rd party code embedded within the editor.
- There will most likely not be any future version of Free Rich Text Editor released. (But who knows what the future has in store)?
Update: I keep changing my mind on the above point, I think it is fair to say that there will be another version of FreeRTE eventually when i have more time available, but it will not be based off existing code
- I am no longer offering support on helping people setup FreeRTE or answering questions relating to installation. It just takes up too much of my time.
- I am still involved in the rtePad project, and all is going well, check it out at www.rtepad.com
New Editor Released
Hello everyone!
Although there has been a lack of updates recently, alot of stuff has been happening. The main one of which i am talking about is the release of a new commercial wysiwyg rich text editor called rtePad which i know would interest alot of people that visit this site. I wont ramble on and on about it, but if you want to check it out you can do so by clicking the image below, it is very competitive with all of the other
commercial grade editors out there and is by far leaps and bounds ahead of freeRTE in every way, it will also soon support multiple instances of an editor on the one page, which from the emails i have recieved seems to be a common point of interest for web developers looking to use WYSIWYG editors in their applications.
As far as updates to freeRTE is concerned, i may be releasing an update or two in the future to fix the bugs that people have located, but apart from that i will be focusing my efforts on rtePad from now on however this site will remain active for many years to come.
Kind Regards
Steve
Happy New Year
Hello, first i would like to say happy new year to all and a merry christmas (even though its a little late). Firstly onto the lack of forums on this site:
I have been forced to remove the forums from my site as i was getting excessive spamming and hack attacks, and it just wasnt worth my time to purge the board of all these spam attacks and fix the forums up everytime they have been hacked or messed up and i guess i can say, im sick of dealing with it and will not do so anymore. You can still reach me by email for any questions you may have about FreeAJAX or FreeRTE.
On to a better subject.. I am working on a new project which requires something similar to freeRTE to be developed, so i have taken to the liberty of rewriting FreeRTE completely from scratch, no ETA on this as of yet, but sometime this year i would imagine. The main differences will be faster, smaller, and re-designed to look like the new versions of Microsoft Office soon to be released if not already.
That is all for now, thanks for reading.

Notes on Safari Compatibility.
Support for safari is limited due to the fact that Safari has extremely limited support for the contentEditable mode, which makes me wonder why they bothered implementing it at all.
I have rectified the major lag issues and selection issues in the editor so that it works with Safari, and what features Safari do support, do work in the editor, and as time goes by and Apple gets their act together then my guess is that the editor will start to do more and more, until Apple catches up with all the other major web browsers and their support for contentEditable.
